Why making new friends as an adult feels so awkward
Making new friends gets harder after school because the places that used to hand you people stop existing. No shared classroom, no dorm hallway, no team practice three nights a week. Most adults are not short on kindness, they are short on low-stakes chances to talk to someone new.
Work friends drift when the job changes. Old friends move cities, have kids, get busy. Then one evening you realize the last real conversation you had with a person outside your house was a week ago. That is ordinary. It is also the reason so many people now try to find friends online instead of waiting for life to arrange it.
The catch is that a lot of online spaces were not built for friendship. Feeds reward performing. Group chats are full of people who already know each other. And plenty of apps that say they help you meet new friends quietly run on the same swipe-and-judge loop as dating apps.
